Information - Background

The Cornish Real Nappy Project, launched in 2002 as a public
private partnership between Lollipop Children’s Products, Cornwall County Council and Cornwall Healthcare Trust. Following changes to our funding the project is now managed by ReZolve Kernow Ltd. All those originally involved in the project remain on its steering group and contribute to its direction.

Cornwall has around 5000 births per annum and single use disposable nappies amount to 3.2% of household waste going to landfill (7000 tonnes per year) at a cost to the Cornish taxpayer of an estimated £300,000 per year.

This project is having outstanding environmental benefits by reducing
the amount of nappy waste going to landfill. The aim of this project is
to inform and convince parents to choose washable alternatives.

Its not just the environment that gains, parents could save from £400 to £800 by using washable nappies as opposed to buying disposable nappies. Each baby born needs over 4000 nappy changes before potty training, this can cost parents anything from £1000 to £1600 in disposable nappies. Income levels in Cornwall are below the national average so avoiding unneccesary expense is important for many people.
