After so much positive feedback during 2002, 2003 was a natural progression to expand the hospital trials and attendance at events. The project reached an increasing audience through events and nappicinos. 

During 2003 the project ran several successful pilot schemes including:

¨ A composting trial with seven families converting to washable/ compostable nappies.

¨ Nappies for All scheme, providing interest free loans for nappies, to parents, within the Sure Start pebbles area.

¨ A trial at Penrice birthing unit using Prefold nappies for three months. Then swapping nappy type to terry squares for a further trial, which was very successful and is continuing today.

These initiatives throughout the year are reflected in the figures for landfill diversion. Sales figures from April 2003 to December 2003 show diversion increased by 80% from the previous year up to 576 tonnes . This brought the project’s total diverted to over 890 tonnes, a total saving to date for the waste disposal authority of over £33,000.
