Nappies - Common Myths
"Cloth nappies are hard work"
The washing machine does most of the work! The work involved includes changing the baby in the normal way, cleaning well to avoid nappy rash and putting the nappy in a bucket with a lid. No different to disposables!
The washing machine does most of the next bit! You can soak the nappies though it is not absolutely necessary, provided that you have removed any soiling (this can be done very cleanly with flushable paper liners, or simply sluicing nappy in the toilet). Nappies can be soaked in cold water with either a small amount of white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, tea tree oil or non bleach nappy soak.
Then put them in the washing machine at 60ºC Dry them which ever way you chose - line, tumble or drying rack.
"Your baby’s clothes will get wet"
Modern washable nappies are designed to fit well, snugly with out marking the skin. A cloth nappy adequately padded should last for up to 4 hours during the day and up to 12 hours at night. If any thing they should leak less, with soft covered elastic against the skin to contain any solids and absorbent cotton to deal with the liquid.
"They make your house smell"
If you keep your used nappies in a lidded bucket you shouldn't notice the smell, and as we recommend washing a load of nappies every 2-3 days anything nasty isn't hanging around for long. Not like waiting a week for the bin men!
"You need to become an expert in origami and sharp pins" Most of today's washable nappies are shaped, many like disposables. They fasten with Velcro or poppers, even terry squares can be fastened with nappy nippas (a non pin grip). Shaped nappies come in many sizes or one size that fits from birth to toddler. All in ones are like disposables in design with an integral water proof outer layer and either Velcro or poppers to fasten them.
"Your baby will end up with bow legs"
Disposable nappies are a relatively recent product, so many of us wore terry nappies as babies. I personally can not think of a single person I know who is bow legged!
