Local MP Matthew Taylor Visits Pioneering Cornish Real NappyProject
Matthew Taylor PM visited Penrice Birthing Unit at St Austell on the 14th October where the award winning Cornish Real Nappy Project (CRNP) presented the Unit with 50 ‘Stork’ Eco washable nappies to replace and augment the washable nappies already being used on the unit.
The ‘Stork’ Eco-Nappies, which have exceptionally low laundry costs, were designed by a midwife and have been tested and approved to NHS requirements within a hospital setting. Effectively reducing costly clinical waste, the nappies will promote environmental best practice, with the added bonus of financial savings which can be reinvested into health care services.
Matthew Taylor MP also unveiled the new CRNP real nappy display which is sited in the day room, so that all the new mums can see at a glance the latest designs of washable nappies and realise the support that the Cornish Real Nappy Project can offer.
“The Cornish Real Nappy Project is an excellent scheme, and I am proud to give it my wholehearted support”said Mathew Taylor MP, adding, “Real nappies are good for the environment, not to mention the pocket, and CRNP is helping to keep Cornwall a clean and green county.”
Since 2002 CRNP has been able to provide independent information and advice on the financial and environmental benefits of using real nappies. Working closely with the local authorities and health professionals the project covers the whole of the county.
Cornwall currently has 5,000 births per annum and single use disposable nappies amount to over 7,000 tonnes of waste going to landfill at a cost to the Cornish taxpayer of an estimated £300,000 per year.
To raise awareness of this important environmental issue, The Cornish Real Nappy Project, funded by the Big Lottery’s CRED programme, is running over 100 nappicinos each year throughout Cornwall. Nappicino’s are child friendly stay and play fun days where mums, dads and carers can chat about using, choosing and caring for washable nappies. CRNP also offers washable nappy trial kits to take home for a month so that parents can see for themselves how easy and economical washable nappies are.
Cllr Shirley Polmounter also attended and presented CRNP with a £250 cheque on behalf of Restormel Borough Council to be used for further washable nappy trial kits to be used in the Borough.
CRNP Quote: It is great to be working with Penrice”, said Kate Jackson, Project Manager of CRNP. “The washable nappies used at the Birthing Unit are proving to be very popular with both staff and mums. We are most grateful to Restormel Borough Council for the £250 award, which will provide washable nappy trial kits for the
