To reduce the risk of toxic shock syndrome:

Avoid high absorbency tampons and change every 4-6 hours,
during the night too. Most cases of TSS can be avoided
by ensuring that tampon absorbency is not too
great for the bloodflow.

Use a sanitary towel at night.

Avoid tampons that contain rayon and look for
a low fibre-loss brand.

Alternate towels and tampons as much as possible.

Never use two tampons at once to increase absorbency
and always ensure that you have removed one
before inserting another.

Keep tampons clean and dry, always wash your hands
before and after changing tampons.

Never use tampons if you are not having a period.
