The Options
Washable pads: absorbent cloth pads - many designed along the lines of single use sanitary pads - with wings that popper together under the pant to hold the pad in place. They are easy to use with styles, shapes and sizes to suit everyone. Once used they can be soaked in a container with cold water until you put them in the washing machine.
Menstrual cups are eggcup-like in shape and made from silicone or natural rubber. These are inserted in a similar way to a tampon and held in place by the pelvic muscles. They catch the flow and you simply remove and empty as often as necessary (2 -4 times a day); these are a hygenic and versatile option because they can be sterilised and, like a tampon, you can carry on as normal with activities such as swimming, surfing, camping and even mountaineering.
Or as an occasional alternative.....
